Tips On Sleeping When It is Hot Outside
Nearly everyone in the UK would have struggled to fall asleep this week, after temperatures soared so high, they broke records. Even though the heatwave has faded and it is much cooler and more comfortable, it is worth knowing some tips on how to sleep in hot weather for the next time the mercury soars.
Cold hot water bottle
Most of us have warmed up with a hot water bottle before, but ResMed recommends filling one up with cold water, putting in the freezer and using it to cool down instead.
Failing this, an ice-pack wrapped in a tea towel on pulse points will instantly lower your body temperature too.
Freeze sheets
It is also worth popping your sheets in a plastic bag and placing them in the freezer shortly before you get into bed. This will cool them down quickly and make it easier to fall asleep.
Warm shower
Although a warm shower is probably the last thing you want to do on a hot sweaty night, it can help you cool down by increasing blood flow to your skin, helping to stimulate heat loss from the body.
Move to the floor
Sleep therapist Christabel Majendie told Healthline a good way to feel less sweaty at night is by moving on to the floor.
“Sleeping low to the ground is cooler, so try putting your mattress on the floor,” she recommended.
Close windows and blinds
Another way to feel less flustered at night is to make sure windows and blinds are closed at the hottest points of the day. Then open them when the weather gets cooler in the evening to encourage air flow through the house.
